Acromioclavicular InjuriesAbout your injury Acromioclavicular (AC) injuries occur when the collar bone (clavicle) seperates from a part of the shoulder blade (acromion process). How did it happen? AC injuries are usually caused by a direct blow or fall on the tip of the shoulder. It can also be caused by a fall on an outstretched hand. People who play hockey, rugby, martial arts and participate in bike and horse riding are most susceptible to this type of shoulder injury. What are the symptoms? Symptoms may include pain, inflammation, tenderness and bruising over the tip of the shoulder. Pain is usually made worse with all shoulder movements. Depending on the degree and type of seperation, there may also be a noticable prominence of the collar bone. An x-ray may show the extent of the injury. What should I do?
