Acromioclavicular Injuries

About your injury

Acromioclavicular (AC) injuries occur when the collar bone (clavicle) seperates from a part of the shoulder blade (acromion process).

How did it happen?

AC injuries are usually caused by a direct blow or fall on the tip of the shoulder. It can also be caused by a fall on an outstretched hand. People who play hockey, rugby, martial arts and participate in bike and horse riding are most susceptible to this type of shoulder injury.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms may include pain, inflammation, tenderness and bruising over the tip of the shoulder. Pain is usually made worse with all shoulder movements. Depending on the degree and type of seperation, there may also be a noticable prominence of the collar bone. An x-ray may show the extent of the injury.

What should I do?

  • Rest from all painful activities
  • Ice the AC using a bag of frozen peas or ice pack wrapped in a tea towel. Do this for 10 minutes every hour
  • Take some anti-inflammatory medication such as Nurofen
  • Use a sling or a modified Kinney-Howard brace if the injury is particularly bad
  • Consult an Osteopath for some physical therapy and advice on strengthening exercises

Alternatives

If the injury is severe, it may be necessary to consult an Orthopaedic surgeon to discuss the option of surgery.
